Martley Cricket Club Junior Section Season Review 2018
Wow what a summer! It started off wet and miserable in April yet by the end of July the ground was parched, the new nets were in full swing and MCC had lots more players.
All Stars takes off!
During the winter months we realised that we had a dearth of players under the age of 11 and needed to do something about this asap. In early May SB’s primary school assemblies had seized the imagination of many of the local youngsters and over 50 children had signed up for All Stars (5-8 years old) and All Stars+ (9-11 years old). Enter stage left the dynamic duo of Tom Clement and Stuart Watt ably supported by Alex Basford, Ollie Dunks, Jon McGahan and the ‘Old Contemptibles’ (SB & JBB). Their lively and engaging Friday night training sessions won the hearts and minds of these youngsters and their parents. Jury Field was a hive of activity with all the children wearing sky blue t-shirts and swinging their orange cricket bats over their shoulders. They played rocket fuel batting, orbit bowling, catching comets and ‘Yes, No, Wait’. Unbeknownst to many of them they were learning the core skills of the game in a fun and exciting manner. Their season finished with a rainy presentation evening but that didn’t diminish their enjoyment of the waterslide and BBQ. Let’s hope they all come back again next year!
Play the game with a smile on your face!
What the Under 13s team might sometimes have lacked in skill they always made up for with their unbounding enthusiasm for the game! Win or lose (and they did this more often) they were always cheerful and good humoured. With 10 players available for selection they happily took it in turns to stand down to give everybody an opportunity to play. The Squad was as follows: Jim Pinches, Owen Birchley, Dan King, James Spencer, Henry Mountjoy, Charlie and Alfie Hosking, Jacob Pugh, Charlie Cant and Josh Dawe.
They played all of their 8 league matches and by the end of the season they were a decent team capable of giving all their opponents a competitive match. They scored totals of over 100 runs in three of their last four games and defeated Worcester Nomads by 37 runs. They enjoyed the after match awards given for the best catch, best shot and best bowling during the game. Next year they will play U14 11-a-side cricket so they will need to do lots of practice in the new nets next spring!
How many players have we got tonight?
It’s only fair to say that getting a full team out for the Under 15s was a struggle this season! One or two players went AWOL and others had conflicting commitments on some match nights. However other clubs faced similar issues and two fixtures were cancelled because our opponents couldn’t raise a team. Despite these setbacks the team still played six of their eight matches, often helped out by U13s stepping up to make up the starting eleven.
The season started with a very disappointing defeat in the Cup to Ombersley. However the performances picked up after this and the remaining fixtures were all competitive with the season finishing with an excellent nine wicket win over Rushwick. The Squad was as follows: Tobey Jones, Ewan Guy, Tom Butler, Sam Pinches, Will Dunks, Ollie Saunders, George Rose, Adam York, Alfie Galvin, Max Houchin, Henry Mountjoy and Owen Birchley. Top batter was Tom Butler (148 runs) and top bowler Will Dunks (7 wkts). Many have also played regularly for the 2XI and started to find their feet in senior cricket. Well done!
